R.O.Y. – Return On You

When we think about investing in assets and getting a return on those assets, I believe few of us think of ourselves in that way. I’m not referring to investing in yourself, which is meant by investing in the various ways of improving ourselves mentally, physically or otherwise, that’s a subject for another day. What I’m referring to is more about thinking of ourselves as if we (our physical selves) were an asset that we would strive to gain a monetary return from. If we invest our money (or time) into a business and the business is producing income, we would expect to get a return from that investment, right? Well…what if we think of ourselves as that business. Shouldn’t we expect a return on our investment? Wouldn’t you expect a return on you? I would…and I do!

For those of us who may be self-employed, this thought probably makes more sense, but most of us who are employed by someone else, we may have a difficult time realizing the concept. When we’re employed by someone else, we put or time in, day in and day out to do our job for our employer and our employer compensates us for our time in the form of a paycheck. Let’s look at it this way…your employer is in the business of XYZ, but you are in the business of YOU. In the business of YOU, the compensation received from the employer (the paycheck) is the earnings the business of YOU receives for the services provided to the employer. From that compensation (or earnings), is where you should expect to get your return from. That return is what we will consider as being the “Return On You”! That return can be whatever you want it to be, 1%, 10%, 20%. No matter what the percentage is, you should strive to get a return just like you would from any other investment. This concept plays into the strategy of paying yourself first!

R.O.Y. is about thinking of ourselves as an investment and setting ourselves up to gain a return on that investment. It’s making sure you pay dividends to yourself for what was earned. The best asset we have is our very own self. This is where it all starts. It starts with YOU…your first investment. If we don’t take care of and manage our first investment properly, then no other investments will be possible. Managing our investments and assets are a very important part of our financial well-being and wealth building as we go through our journey. So, what better way to start, than to start with our most immediate asset…ourselves!
