Envision the Future

A good part of setting ourselves up for financial freedom comes from being able to leave the past behind us, look past today and envision the future that we want. For a lot of people, visualization comes naturally, but for others, engaging in visual creative thinking is tough. How can we set goals for ourselves if we don’t have a vision of where we want to be? Visualization is a “technique” used by the most successful people in all areas of life from athletes to actors to CEO’s. By playing out in their minds eye, as if watching a movie, seeing themselves achieving whatever it is they’re setting themselves up to accomplish. We all have that same ability, and as with anything we want to accomplish in our lives, including financial freedom, visualization is a key component. At many points in our lives, we’ve all used visualization to one degree or another, even those of us that feel like they have a difficult time with envisioning their future. For example, imagining yourself driving that new car before you actually buy it or what restaurant to go to when trying to decide what to eat. Those are small, not so distant visions that we have on a daily basis and the concept for long term, far off into the distance visions is the same.

When we envision the future, we imagine a “perfect picture” of doing exactly what we want to do. It’s actually more like a movie than a picture playing out in our minds creating a pattern in our brain of performing the actions as if we are actually doing them. By doing this, we allow ourselves to practice in our minds, having and doing what it is we desire. Along with the vision, we must also have a positive mental attitude so that the future we’re envisioning is something we believe is possible. If we don’t believe it’s possible, then no amount of imagination will ever make it a reality. It’s the combination of imagining and believing that will propel us forward to take real actions toward our vision. Those small actions that we need to take to move us toward the vision of our distant future will also require the imagination and visualization of how and what it will take to get there. So, as we can see, envisioning the “big picture” of what we desire in our distant future also takes a smaller, less distant vision. Which when we stop to think about it, is what we find ourselves doing in so many other areas of our lives on a daily basis.

Visualization is a powerful tool that can be used by anyone. There are no guarantees and there is certainly no replacement for hard work, but with some focus, belief and an imagination what we envision will soon become a reality. By making a conscious effort to consistently practice visualizing and believing in whatever it is we’re imagining, we’ll be on our way to creating the future we desire. Set financial goals, have a positive mental attitude, keep a money focused mindset and envision the future of financial freedom.
