Be Inspired – Not Envious

Life has a way of bombarding us with elaborate lifestyles and luxuries of the rich and famous and sometimes not even famous people. From celebrities and professional athletes to founders and CEO’s of Fortune 500 companies to the local millionaire who owns a small chain of stores in the area. Whether we admit it to ourselves or not, there are moments, maybe even the slightest of moments when we may feel a bit envious of their fortune and lifestyle. At that moment, there are a few things that can happen. We can dwell on it and continue to feel envious which will cause resentment among other things, we can choose not to focus on it by appreciating what we have and being content or we can be inspired and use that inspiration to take the necessary steps for our journey to financial freedom. Envy is a strong emotion if we allow it to get a strong hold on us and as we can imagine, inspiration and envy do not go hand-in-hand.

Overcoming jealousy or envy is not an easy task, but it can be done if we truly want to change our situation. Envy kills inspiration. It’s a very toxic emotion, so as long as we are envious, we can’t be inspired. If we find ourselves being continuously jealous or envious, we need to become more self-aware to find out why we’re feeling that way. Being self-aware is about making a conscious effort with taking note of what is that’s causing the feeling of jealousy or envy at the moment we’re feeling it and giving ourselves feedback to uncover the reason for feeling that way. Most often we’ll find we’re comparing ourselves to others based on what we see. Sometimes the reasons are more internal like feeling insecure about who we are or threatened by their prestige. Once we pinpoint the root causes of our envy, we’ll realize that what we’re feeling is more about how we are judging ourselves and our very own perception of what we think should be. And it’s that cycle that needs to be broken before we can make any successful progress.

As we become more self-aware and conquer the thoughts that cause us to be envious, we can then look at those who we see as being highly successful and use what we view as their success to be inspired in our own lives. Allow them and their story to inspire us to set and achieve our goals. Instead of being envious, be curious! Be curious about who they are and how they became successful. Ask them questions, get to know them, create friendships with them, ask them for mentorship. The last thing we want to do is become jealous or envious, because those feelings will only hurt our chances of ever becoming successful in anything we attempt to do. It’s going to be the inspiration that we get from others that are financially successful, not our jealousy or envy of them that will put us on the right path to our own financial freedom.
