Only You Can Choose Your Attitude

“The thoughts in your mind will always be more important than the things in your life.” ― John C. Maxwell

You may have never thought of yourself as having any special abilities or powers, but you do. In fact, we all do! One of the most powerful abilities you possess as an individual is the power to choose your attitude. You can’t always control your circumstances, but you are the only one who can control what you think or how you think. Now that’s true power!

It’s completely up to you to figure out how you want to look at the world around you and decide how you will react to it. You can either have a positive attitude of self-encouragement and motivation or a negative attitude of defeat and self-pity. Even though we all have that ability, some people have a more difficult time than others in harnessing that power. It may be more difficult, but it’s not impossible.

Only You Can Choose Your Attitude

The bottom line is the choice is yours and yours alone, no one can choose it for you, and it starts with your inner voice. It starts with what you tell yourself about everything that is going on around you with what you see, feel, hear and touch. And what you tell yourself about it is how you will respond to it. Just like any other ability that needs to be developed, it takes effort and patience.

It’s your self talk that drives your attitude throughout life. Learn to recognize the negative thoughts and dialog you have going on in your head and learn to replace them with positive ones. People may think that if you talk to yourself, you’re crazy! The fact of the matter is that if you don’t talk to yourself, you will go crazy. Don’t be afraid to talk to yourself, just make sure it stays positive.

“Every Moment Offers Us Choices. Choose wisely, Because the Choices You Make, Make You.”
― Lyssa Danehy deHart

Choices…you face them in so many different areas of your life and your attitude is one of them. You can actually choose to have a good attitude or a bad attitude. Sounds simple, right? Well, as simple as that might sound, you know that it’s not always that easy to choose the right attitude in every situation. It’s easier to have a good attitude when you’re not facing challenges or devastating circumstances.

It’s when you have those not so good times that your choice of attitude is put to the test. You always have your ups and downs, your highs and yours lows, but the fact will always remain that no matter what, it’s your choice. Only you can choose your attitude, no one else can choose it for you. There are always going to be negative circumstances, but how you allow it to affect you is up to you.

The amazing thing about choosing the right attitude is that it sets you up to make different decisions which can significantly affect your current and/or future circumstances. That is why the choices that you make about your attitude are so important, because it will have that ripple effect. Good or bad attitudes will ripple out to give you continued good or bad circumstances.

The inner dialog you have with yourself when dealing with a negative circumstance is where it all starts. It won’t always be an easy choice to give yourself positive self talk when times are tough and it may take a more conscious, deliberate effort to speak positive words during those times, but it’s when you’re able to do that, that you’ll see things in your life change.

“It’s choice – not chance – that determines your destiny.” – Jean Nidetch

Your attitude about any given situation is entirely your choice. That doesn’t mean you can control every situation, but what it does mean is that you can control how you react to it. How you choose your attitude is largely based on habits. Habits that you form by consistently feeding your mind, consciously or sub-consciously, with the things you see, read and hear.

If you constantly see, read or hear negative things, then your mind will naturally produce negative thoughts. But if you consistently see, read or hear positive things, then you will naturally produce positive thoughts. It would be unreasonable to suggest blocking or removing all negative things from your life, but the key is consistency. What are you constantly feeding into your mind?

Those thoughts that you develop in your mind is what will ultimately come out in your self talk. Positive or negative, good or bad, what you take in is what you will put out. So, there is a process to develop the ability of choosing the right attitude and all it takes is a slight adjustment to what you consistently allow into your mind. The more consistently you do it, the more second nature it becomes.

There will always be challenges and difficulties, but how you face them will determine your destiny. You don’t have to be a victim of your circumstances as long as you remember to realize that you have the power to choose your attitude. You might not always have control of what is going on around you, but you do have control of what you tell yourself about it!
